ANNIE MARY HARRIS MORTENSEN WAS BORN NOVEMBER 4, 1881 AT PLEASANT GROVE, UTAH. SHE MOVED WHEN SHE WAS A LITTLE GIRL TO SALEM, IDAHO WITH HER PARENTS MARY CELESTIA BLACK HARRIS AND CYRUS RICHARD JAMES HARRIS. SHE WAS THE OLDEST
OF ELEVEN CHILDREN BORN TO THIS UNION, FOUR. HER HOME WAS A COVERED WAGON. A LITTLE LATER IT WAS A TWO-ROOM LOG HOUSE WHICH, AT THAT TIME, SEEMED LIKE A MANSION. THEY HAD DIRT FLOORS, AND BROOMS WERE UNKNOWN TO THEM. FLOORS WERE SWEPT BY SAGE BRUSH. SHE, ALONG WITH HER FAMILY, KNEW THE HARDSHIPS OF PIONEER LIFE HAVING TO HUNT SEGO LILY ROOTS FOR FOOD TO EAT. SHOES WERE A LUXURY IN THOSE DAYS AND WERE WORN ONLY ON SPECIAL OCCASIONS. SHE KNEW THE FEARS OF INDIANS AND WILD ANIMALS AND HAS RELATED MANY FAITH PROMOTING INCIDENTS THAT SHE HAS EXPERIENCED. SHE WAS EDUCATED AT THE RICKS COLLEGE, KNOWN AS THE BANNOCK STAKE ACADEMY AT THAT TIME, WHICH WAS ESTABLISHED IN THE FALL Of 1888. SHE ATTENDED THIS SCHOOL UNTIL SHE REACHED WHAT THEY CALLED "SECOND YEAR NORMAL,"
WHICH WAS THE HIGHEST GRADE TAUGHT.
AT THE AGE Of 9 WHEN SALEM WARD WAS BEING ORGANIZED, SHE WAS SET APART AS THE FIRST CHORISTER IN THE SALEM PRIMARY. LATER SHE WAS SUSTAINED ORGANIST Of THE BANNOCK STAKE. SHE WORKED IN THE PRIMARY FOR 40 YEARS HOLDING, AT DIFFERENT TIMES, ALMOST ALL POSITIONS INCLUDING THE PRESIDENT. SHE HAS BEEN SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER, CHORISTER, AND WORKED IN RELIGION CLASSES; SHE WAS BEEHIVE AND JUNIOR
GIRL TEACHER AND PRESIDENT Of THE MIA. SHE WAS DRAMA AND PAGEANT DIRECTOR Of THE WARD, DRAMATIZING 63 PAGEANTS AND DRAMAS SUCH AS "PEG OF MY HEART," "HONOR OF A COWBOY," "OLD-FASHIONED MOTHER," "EAST LYNN," "PRAIRIE ROSE”, "ALICE
IN WONDERLAND" AND MANY 0THERS. SHE ASSISTED DOCTORS IN
THE BIRTH OF 203 BABIES. MANY, MANY TIMES SHE HAS SACRAFICED HER MOST VALUABLE TIME TO AID THE SICK AND HELP THE NEEDY. HER KIND, WARM HEART WAS VERY SINCERELY APPRECIATED ALWAYS.SHE SOLD HER HOME IN SALEM IN ABOUT 1942 AT THE TIME OF WORLD WAR II WHEN HER YOUNGEST SON WAS CALLED INTO THE SERVICE. SHE MOVED TO SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH WHERE SHE RESIDED FOR A SHORT TIME. THEN SHE MOVED TO IDAHO FALLS
WHERE SHE SETTLED AND BOUGHT A HOME IN THE SIXTH WARD. SHE RESIDED HERE UNTIL THE TIME OF HER DEATH. AT THE AGE OF17 SHE MARRIED PETER MORTENSEN ON OCTOBER 20, 1899. LATER THEIR MARRIAGE WAS SOLOMNIZED IN THE SALT LAKE CITY TEMPLE,
AND TO THIS UNION 13 CHILDREN WERE BORN THE FOLLOWING SONS AND DAUGHTERS: C. FARREL MORTENSEN, MRS. ZULA HEATON, MRS. BEULAH ANDERSEN, MRS. ERMA KEMP, AND MRS. HORTENSE RASMUSSEN, ALL Of SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH; CLIFFORD MORTENSEN AND FLOYD MORTENSEN OF IDAHO FALLS; LAMONT MORTENSEN OF SALEM; ELMER B. MORTENSEN OF SPOKANE, WASHINGTON; AND WILLIAM F. MORTENSEN Of RATHDRUM, IDAHO,
SHE WAS PRECEDED IN DEATH BY HER HUSBAND AND THREE CHILDREN; PETER MORTENSEN,
MELVIN VANON MORTENSEN, AND EVERETT LAVAR MORTENSEN.
