KAREN JENSEN OR JENSDATTER

Karen Jensen, daughter of Jens Jensen and Else Margrethe Christensen, was born 23 May 1812, at Westerby, Oland, Hjoringant, Denmark.

Karen Jensen's daughter Annie was born out of wedlock.

Karen Jensen married Jens Gottfredson 12 August 1845, at Jedsmark, Hjorring, Denmark. Children Peter, Hans Jens, Mette Christine, and Joseph Smith were born in Denmark.

The family came on the ship, John J. Boyd in 1857 with husband, Jens, wife, Karen and children: Jens Peter, Hans Jens, Mette Christine, Joseph Smith.

Combine with:
Karen is a daughter of Jens Petersen (1776-1837) and Else Margrethe Christensen (1789-1855). Born and raised in the Oland parrish of Hjorring Denmark, she married Jens Gottfredsen there on July 4, 1845.

Karen and Jens became the parents of Peter, Hans Jens, Mette Christine, Joseph Smith, and Thomas (1855-1855). The became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and worked to save enough money to immigrate to Utah. They set sail on the ship John J. Boyd on December 12, 1855. Of the 508 passengers on board, many were members of the Mormon Church and were led by Knud Petersen.

The voyage was terrible. The wintery Atlantic waters were cold and stormy. A storm came up and drove them back to the coast of Ireland. The ship caught fire twice. The captain was a very cruel man who killed one of his sailors for not working hard enough (in his opinion). When they sighted a shipwrecked ship the captain ordered them to sail on. The crew mutinied, locked the captain up, and rescued the crew of the other ship. When they finally reached New York, the captain disappeared after stating that if he hadn't had the Mormons on board, he'd have made port six weeks earlier. Brother Knud Petersen replied that without the Mormons he'd have been in hell six weeks earlier.

The Gottfredsen family made their way to Alton, Illinois (a little north of Saint Louis). Jens got a job at a brick kiln. He needed to earn the money to get them to Utah. In June 1856 disaster struck. Jens became very ill from chills and fever and lost his job. And then on July 4th Karen died leaving the four remaining children, ranging in age from ten to four, motherless, with Jens still recovering from his illness. Karen had been a weaver working on a handloom most of her life. Breathing in the lint from the clothe irritated her lungs causing weaver's consumption, finally resulting in her early death.

Before they left Denmark, Karen had a dream which she had told to Jens in great detail. She saw their journey over the ocean and then on across the many states to the edge of the plains, but there her dream ended. She had not dreamed of arriving in Utah to live among the Saints in Zion.

Karen was buried at Alton, Illinois.
