Bert was blinded at age 14. They were shaking up bottles of lye and throwing them to watch them explode, when Bert shook one up and it exploded in his face. He had quite the sense of humor and when asked what color were his eyes he would say before the explosion they were blue, after the explosion they were blew.
He was the owner of Bert's Hamburger Stand in Salt Lake City Utah, this was the first hamburger stand in Utah. Being blind, Bert was robbed many times, but never stopped helping those in need. He would feed anyone willing to work.
When Mary Laverty needed work, he hired her to clean the restaurant, she did such a good job that he hired her to work a few hours a day, then a few days a week, then full time, Then he married her.
Stories told by his step son Jack Mclelland, were that he was a good man and taught Jack many valuable lessons. Like when Jack had a newspaper route, Bert told Jack he would need a bike. Bert took him to the bike store and picked out a $35.00 bike, Jack thought this is great, Bert is going to buy him a bike, instead he paid the man $1.00 and told the salesman that Jack would make the payments until the debt was paid.He also charged Jack Board and Room by making him work at the hamburger stand eight hours each Saturday.
