My Parents – Edith H Parkinson & Leland Lafayette Thompson Mom was born in Rexburg, Idaho and enjoyed a fun childhood living the summers at their farm house on the Rexburg Bench about 7 miles southeast of town. Most of the activities were involved with her siblings and she was introduced to hard work early in her childhood. And at a young and tender age of nine her father died from pneumonia complications. This left Grandma Parkinson with seven children to rear and with Mom being the third oldest of the children it created hard work, sacrifice, and severe monetary restrictions. Mom was not able to attend school beyond the ninth grade because it required her to work to help support the family. However with her limited education I was often in awe of her wisdom and ability to quickly grasp the entire situation. Her keen mind was prevalent in the games she played and she excelled in card games, particularly Bridge which she played until over 95 years of age. With her work ethic she continued to help Dad in the financial realm working as a telephone operator on a part time basis. This work ethic was dominant in the rearing of four children, helping Dad in his plumbing business, and building the Cabin. Most of the interior painting of the cabin is a masterpiece by Mom and has not needed repainting in the 65 plus years since she accomplished the feat. Then when Dad passed away at the early age of 51 Mom continued to operate the plumbing business with the exceptional help from Darrel Wasden. Another positive aspect of Mom was her total honesty but she had very little respect to those who were not honest with her. Dad was also born in Rexburg and I know very little about his youth. One happening occurred while he was in High School that I feel created ill feelings toward the LDS Church. Grandpa Thompson was involved with dances in Rexburg and beer was for sale during the dances. Dad helped with the coat check-in for the dances and he loved to dance so participated. He was attending the Ricks Academy which was the high school for the Rexburg area. Superintendent Romney (Marion D. Romney’s father) was totally against the selling of beer at the dances and also said Dad’s dancing, perhaps drinking a beer, and the environment at the dance hall was contrary to academy policy and subsequently expelled Dad from the academy. Dad then went to Salt Lake where he lived with his brother Pete and wife Anabell and graduated from High School in Salt Lake. But that had a severe negative effect on Dad and I recall hearing about it for a long portion of my youth. Dad also had a strong work ethic, very skilled as a carpenter and wood-worker as attested by his skills at the cabin; he loved people, extremely pleased with his family, and very gregarious. He was well accepted in the community, often participated in the town dramatics and plays and generally asked to be the clown for the annual 4th of July parade. He had the nickname as the “Good Looking Plumber” and men were constantly in the shop to converse with him. As I mentioned earlier in this history, he would have been a fantastic grandfather! Mom and Dad were very family oriented and we truly enjoyed being together with card games and other family activities. Mom idolized Dad when he was sober and Dad had great respect and love for Mom. But an extreme change came with his alcohol consumption and it really created difficult family problems. Mom often accused me of not loving Dad because of his alcohol addiction but that is not the case. I had some fantastic experiences with Dad when he was sober especially working with him in my younger years. I forgave Dad for his addiction many years ago and look forward to the Eternal reunion with Mom and Dad.
