My Search for My Grandfather’s Lost Brother, Jens Valdemar
The date today is 21 September 2014. Over thirty years ago I began seriously seeking my ancestors on my Mother’s side. My great Uncle and Aunt (Joseph Hyrum Petersen and Erma Epsy Pace) on my Father’s side had spent the last twenty years of their life obtaining the genealogy of the Petersen line. I now have a copy of all the research work they accomplished.

The genealogy of the Thompson side had not been done. My Grandparents (Carl Joseph Thomsen and Mariane Geertsen) came to this country from Denmark in 1885, not because of the church but to seek employment and a better life. My Mother and my Dad were not members of the LDS church and did not attend regularly any church so I grew up as a non-member of any faith. I joined the LDS Church at the age of 14 because of scouting but never became active in the church until I was about 27 years old.

Now: My Search for My Grandfather’s Lost Brother

My first problem was learning how to read Danish records and how to research patronymic naming. With the help of missionaries at the Family Research Center in Salt Lake City I was able to learn how to read Danish records and do my own genealogy research.

I was able to find records of my grandfather, Carl Joseph Thomsen and his Father Thomas Pedersen. Thomas Pedersen had four sons and a daughter. The children’s name were Niels Peder, Jens Valdemar, Carl Joseph and Twins (Boy and Girl) who died at birth. I found all the birth records of the family and marriage and death records of all accept Jens Valdemar. I only found Jens birth record, he seemed to have vanished. Thomas Pedersen, the father and Niels and Carl all came to America and settled and died in Utah. I have pictures of all of them and their families except the twins who died and Jens Valdemar who seemed to have disappeared. No one to my knowledge knew what ever had become of him.

I have searched for Jens Valdemar off and on for the past 30 years with no success. Last year with the help of a Danish genealogy site called “Find a Friend in Denmark” some one wrote me and said he found a Jens Valdemar shipping out to sea at the age of 17. I checked the record and it was the Jens Valdemar I had been looking for. Late last year some one else on the same site told me of a Jens Valdemar he had found in a completely different area of Denmark from where my Jens Valdemar was from. I checked these records out and found out it was him. He had married and raised his family in Esbjerg, Ribe, Denmark.
He had been a fisherman. He also died in Esbjerg so I contacted the news paper in Esbjerg and asked for a copy of the death notices in November 1923. They sent me the obituary notice of both he and his wife Thora Christine Mariane Nielsen but no pictures. Jens Valdemar was listed as a Captain.
All I needed now was pictures of Jens Valdemar and his family to complete my records.

Early this year 2014 I received a phone call here at home asking if I was the Petersen who was doing genealogy research on a Thomas Pedersen’s family in Denmark. I told the person yes, that Thomas was my great-grand father. The person said Thomas was also his great-grand father and that would make us second cousins. My next question to him was “which line do you come from??” He told me his grand-father was Jens Valdemar. Of course my next question was “do you have any pictures of Jens Valdemar?? His answer was “YES” and I have his complete “sea-log” of 20 years from the time he shipped out to sea at the age of 17 until he retired, would you like a copy of what I have??

With a choked up feeling in my throat I said YES. The person on the phone introduced himself as Troels Thomsen, my new found 2nd cousin. He too had been doing genealogy on his line and had been searching for information on Thomas Pedersen. He had been looking for Thomas Pedersen’s ancestors and pictures. I sent him all that I had which is about five generations of Thomas Pedersen plus the pictures and history of my grand-father Carl Joseph Thomsen and his brother, my grand-uncle, Niels Peder Thomsen.

Troels Thomsen and his wife Gerda had previously planned a trip to Salt Lake City and then on to Yellowstone Park later in this year. After talking to them several times they changed their plans and decided to come to St George first to visit us and tour the National Parks here in Southern Utah and then go to Yellowstone. The date set was the 14th of September (my birthday). They arrived in the afternoon of the 14th and we spent the next few days visiting and touring Southern Utah. Great times were had and my long search for all of Jens Valdemar records and pictures have been completed.
The search has only taken 30 years plus and the spirit of Elijah to touch the hearts of many people.

I have posted pictures of the above story on familysearch.org. Go to familysearch.org then to family tree.
