My Grandparents - by Agnes Rebecca Jacobsen Muehlen

My grandfather's name was Christian Jensen, and Grandmother's name was Bertha. When I would go to their house, I would walk up the road for half a block, crawl through a hole in the board fence, and walk through a pasture where the cows were grazing. Along the way was a fence with wild rose bushes growing all along it, and how I loved them in the spring when they were in bloom. I would walk past the barn, and there would be Grandpa working in the hay or tending his little yellow horse. Maybe is was light brown, but he appeared yellow to me, and Grandfather took such good care of him that I believe he was just as wide as he was tall, and I never to this day have seen another horse like him. You would have thought he had brought him with him from Denmark. Grandfather used to take me with him when he went to the Mill to get flour and wheat.

Their house was long and very low. It had a hall running through the house from the front door to the back door. Along the ceiling in this house was a ladder which Grandfather could unhook and let down so he could climb upstairs where he had a small grinding machine, and he would let me go up there and watch him grind wheat for different purposes. They had what they called a best room, but hardly anyone ever went into it. There was a big chest in there that held their belongings from Denmark, and I have that chest now. There was a wardrobe which my father made, and I have that also. On the other side of the hall was the room they lived in every day. It had a home-made couch on one side of the room, a small table in front of the window with a chair at either end. In another corner of the room was a bed which was a read attraction for me when I was small. The bedding consisted of a spring, mattress and two feather beds with two nice down pillows. From the ceiling hung a cord with a tassel hanging on the end. This was to take hold of to pull themselves up from the bed. I used to like to go over there once in a while to sleep with them so I could pull myself up with the cord, and I also thought it was fun to hide under the feather bed from Grandfather. Next to this bed was a big trunk and next to that in the corner was a cupboard with the dishes. Then there was a little door leading into a pantry. Between the pantry door and the one leading to the hall stood a little black cook stove.

They used to have a little pony, and it would walk right into the hall of their house, and we would feed it lump sugar. I used to go to Church with my parents and grandparents at the Logan Tabernacle where they held Scandinavian meetings. I always sat next to Grandma as she would reach down into a large pocket on her full-gathered skirt and get sugar lumps and peppermints for me to nibble on. There was a man they called Step-August because he took such long steps when he walked. He had a big red hankerchief which he would take out of his pocket, it was folded neatly. He would unfold it until it was completely opened, blow his nose in one corner, then fold it several times, then wipe it across his nose, then fold it again, wipe his nose again, and finally finish folding it and put it back into his pocket. In a short time he would repeat this all over again.

My grandfather always wore wooden shoes around home while working. My father also had some made to do chores in as they never got his feet wet. I used to help milk the cows, and sometimes I would wear the wooden shoes, and when I sat down I could sit right on the heels of the shoes like a foot stool.

Grandmother had wavy hair, but she always combed it straight back and braided it very tight and wore it in a bob at the back. She also wore a black hood for everyday, and on Sunday she had a cute little black straw bonnet with orchid flowers on it. I have watched my grandmother cord wool by hand and spin it on her spinning wheel into yarn and then watched her knit socks out of it. They used to make malt beer, and the barrel was placed out in back of their house on a large table.
