Faddere: tjenestepige hos købmand Seidelins efterfølger i Holbæk Dorthe Sihack, tømrer Hans Larsen og hustru Ane Marie Nielsen, Lars Christensen, Niels Hansen, alle af Holbæks Smedelundsport.

1. CHARLES FALLENTINE, born Carl Nielsen February 2, 1856 Merlose Denmark
Mother joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His father chose
not to do so which resulted in his parents going separate ways, with the five
children going with the mother.
2. Life was not easy anywhere in Europe at that time. In Denmark as well as in every
European country a standing army was maintained and every boy was required to
"Join" the army at fourteen years of age. Young boys were also required to learn a
trade at a very early age. Carl Nielsen learned two trades before he was twenty
years of age, a butcher and a joiner. A joiner is a carpenter who specializes in
doing the finishing interior work such as doors, molding, stairs, etc.
3. Because of the lack of opportunity to better oneself, Carl Nielsen's father
constantly counseled his sons that if they wanted a better life they should take
advantage of any opportunity to go to America.
4. During the 1870's missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints were found in most of Denmark's main cities and outlying areas. The LDS
Church offered its converts passage to America through its Perpetuating
Emigration Fund. On the passenger list his name appears as "Carl Vallentin." It
seems that when parents separated in Denmark the wife resumes using her
maiden name and the children assume that name also. Carl Vallentin was listed as
passenger #110, 21 years of age, male, occupation joiner. There were 561
passengers aboard that ship, 67 in cabins and 494 in steerage. Steerage was
usually in the bottom of the ship where one stood if there was not room to sit
and a passenger was allowed one piece of "luggage."
The SS WISCONSIN arrived in the Port of New York on September 29, 1877 and
the Company of Saints continued on by rail in charge of Captain Hamilton G. Park.
There is nothing in Carl Vallentin's history pertaining to Ellis Island. He arrived in
Salt Lake City, Utah on October 6, 1877 speaking only the Danish language. He
was so grateful to be in America that he quickly mastered the English. He
encouraged it to be spoken in his home.
5. When Carl Vallentin became a citizen of this country he americanized his name to
CHARLES FALLENTINE. He obtained employment as a deliveryman and met his
future wife when he was making a delivery at a wealthy home where she, who was
also an emigrant from Denmark, was working as a maid. They married and settled
in the area just west of the Jordan River. Charles built a two-room adobe home
where he and his wife lived for approximately two years before boarding up the
home and moving to Ross Fork, BIngham County, which was adjoining an Indian
reservation. After living in that area seven years they decided to return to Salt Lake
City because their children were afraid of white men.

Upon returning to Salt Lake City, Charles Fallentine was employed by the E.B.
Wicks Company who dealt in real estate development. While in the employment of
the E.B. Wicks Company, Charles Fallentine planted lombardy poplar trees along
both sides of Indiana Avenue (850) South from the Jordan River to Redwood Road.
The area was then designated as POPLAR GROVE and is still identified as
POPLAR GROVE today.
6. Charles Fallentine was both "pushed" from Denmark because of the lack of
opportunity and "pulled" by the promise that America held and still holds for those
Individuals who have dreams of bettering themselves.
