Anna Christine Johansen

Hun blev født den 29 juli 1868, døbt i kirken den 11 oktober 1868, datter af ugift Marie Kirstine Larsen og udlagt barnefader Jens Johansen af Saltholm.

In Denmark Church records, 1812-1918.
It shows she was born to unmarried Marie Kirstine Larsen and unmarried farmer Jens Johansen of Saltholm (an island off Copenhagen) they lived at Classenske Boliger L number 9. They didn't have godparents.
Annie Christine Johnson was born in Frederiksberg Copenhagen, Denmark, 1868, the first child of James Johnson and Mary Kirstine Larsen.
James Johnson was born in Sengelose Denmark, in 1844. He died in Hyrum, Utah in 1907.
Mary Kirstine Larsen was born in Vandlose Brondshoe, Denmark in 1842. She died in Hyrum, Utah in 1920.
Grandfather and grandmother Johnson had a three year old boy die in Denmark. They came to America between 1871 and 1873 as records show another son was born in Cottonwood, Salt Lake County in 1873.
They were converted to Mormonism in Denmark and that was the reason they came to America. They didn't expect to find the kingdom ready made, but to help build it.
Grandfather Johnson's mother was the daughter of a Danish Lord.
They moved to Hyrum from Cottonwood about 1875 and three more children were born to them, another girl and two sons. in America, the family worked hard for a livi9ng.
My mother, as a girl, would herd the cows. Their home was in the east part of Hyrum, not too far from the entrance to Blacksmith Fork Canyon.
One time the cows strayed too far and darkness set in. Mother couldn't find the cows and was frightened. Some Indians were camped in the hallow (mouth of canyon) and when they saw mother in tears, they took her to their tepee, fed her and were very kind, promising to find the cows. Early the following morning they returned mother and the cows to her home. She always had a warm spot for the Indians after that experience. The squaw who had cared for mother came to see her every year until mothers death. Strange, but I do remember how hard that Indian squaw cried when she made her annual visit and father informed her that mother was not longer with us. The Indian never came back again.
My father and brothers told me mother chose my name before my birth (should the baby be a girl) Mother heard a friend sing a new song about an Indian maid. Berthel and Joy used to sing it to me. The words went something like this;
My sweet Anona
From Merryzona
There is no other maid I'd serenade
The camp fires gleaming
Of you I'm dreaming
Anona, my sweet Indian Maid
On July 21, 1909 mother gave birth to a stillborn baby girl. Complications set in and she suffered a great deal until her death on August 19, 1909.
Only some one having had the same experience would understand how a little girl can miss and yearn for a mothers love.
Mother's picture rested on an easel in the front parlor. I used to tip toe into the parlor and kiss and talk to my mother's picture.
Many people have told me of my mother's devotion to my father. She was courageous. When father received a call to go to his native Denmark as a missionary for the LDS Church, he said he couldn't possibly leave mother with six children and a business place to manage alone, but mother wouldn't hear tell of him refusing to accept the call.
Mother managed very well and she lived by the golden rule. She would bake pies and cakes for her friends weddings and socials and in return, her friends would sew shirts, etc, for mothers children.
Father also told me my mother was very modest, always kept herself neat and clean. Her beautiful hair was always combed before she prepared breakfast for her family. Her hair was so long she could sit on it.
After mother was gone, grandmother Johnson tried to do for her "Annie's" children. Grandmother talked broken one word English, two Danish. She always wore a bustle and my brothers liked to tease her about that bustle.
She had rheumatism in her legs and we children would make her nervous, so often she would pack up and go home, always had to move her feather tick bed. Then she would feel sorry and come back again to help out.
Grandmother loved to read stories, so father would find stories written in Danish for her but she always would inquire if the story had a happy ending, if not, she wouldn't reat it. He called her Best-A-Mow.
Her hands were always busy, even while she read, she would be doing crochet work and knit stockings. She pieced many guilts by hand. Grandmother loved to dance. I remember at her funeral they said grandma Johnson could be in bed with a bout of rheumatism, but if there was to be an Old Folks Dance, she would get up and go and not miss a dance. In those days senior citizens were called "Old Folks"
I think grandmother suffered more from rheumatism than anyone could imagine. She became quite lame but still walked a great deal, never ready to give up. Grandmother outlived all her children but the youngest son.
She died at the age of 78 in Hyrum.
