Time Line of surname changes for our Thomas Johnson:
NOTE: Patronymics [Denmark] were legally abolished in 1826 since authorities wanted people to use family surnames instead. Nonetheless, it took several decades before patronymics stopped being used. Regarding any person born in Denmark from about 1826-1870, it is impossible to be sure whether their last name is a patronymic or a family surname unless, of course, you already know the name of that person’s parents. 5 APR 1823 Thomas Christensen born at Kibsgaard [farm name], Dronninglund, Hjorring, Denmark to Christen Jorgensen and Karen Thomasdatter.
5 JUN 1856 First family - Thomas Christensen marries Ane Kjerstine Petersen at Randers, Denmark. Ane already had four children by her first husband Anders Poulsen - Birthe, Poul, Karen and Mette Andersen. The last three died young.
1859 Thomas Christensen reverts to the surname of his father Christen Jorgensen when the Danish system of patronymics is again changed by law.
25 MAY - 16 JUL 1866 Thomas Jorgensen's family emigrates to the USA. Their surnames are listed on the passenger manifest of the ship Kenilworth as Kibsgaard (the name of the farm in Denmark, which is another typical Danish naming custom). He came with wife Ane, her child Birthe and his three living children by Ane - Christen, Peter and Martin. Son Jorgen had already died. They passed immigration through Castle Garden, New York, not Ellis Island, per historical record of their LDS Company (see sources in Familysearch.org). I did not find their names on immigration lists under any combination.
2 AUG - 1 OCT 1866 Thomas Christian Jorgensen and family travel with the Mormon Overland Travel Company of Joseph F. Rawlins from the jumping off point of Wyoming, Nebraska (on west bank of Missouri river about 40 miles south of Omaha), United States to the Great Salt Lake.
1866-1872 Thomas Jorgensen and Ane's family resided in Draperville, UT. This is where Thomas may have changed his surname to Johnson.
14 APRIL 1872 Thomas Johnson, Ane and children moved from Draperville, UT to Glenwood, Sevier County, Utah, a LDS United Order community. He is listed in the LDS Glenwood First Ward records as Thomas Johnson.
13 OCT 1874 Thomas Johnson joined the United Order in Glenwood UT.
2 APRIL 1878 Crayton Prisbrey, the son of Joseph Smith Prisbrey and Susanna Veater, is born at Prattsville, Sevier, UT (between Richfield and Glenwood, UT). He is later sealed [adopted] in 1889 at the Manti, UT LDS temple to Thomas Johnson and Susanna Veater as Crayton Davis [sic] along with other 'Davis' children. "Davies", not Davis, was the surname of Susanna Veater's first husband Daniel.
6 JUN 1878 Crayton Prisbrey [Johnson] and Davies children of Susanna Veater are blessed at Glenwood, UT per LDS First Ward records.
18 JUL 1878 Second family - Thomas Christian Jorgensen (not listed as Johnson in temple record) married Susanna Veater in the LDS St. George, Utah temple. This was a plural marriage. I heard once that he was a Bishop in Richfield, UT where he lived with Susanna Veater per census records. Men in LDS Church authority positions were encouraged and expected to take a plural wife in those days. Thomas Johnson's first family of Ane and her children, all on record as Johnsons, continued to reside in Glenwood.
1879 The United Order in Glenwood was disbanded and Thomas Johnson was issued his share of possessions and contributions.
3 JUN 1880 Venice, Sevier, UT Thomas Johnson's first son by Susanna Veater, Thomas Johnson (Jr.), was born at Venice near Richfield and Glenwood, UT.
7 JUL 1880 Richfield, UT Census - Second family living here but now as Jorgensen. The surname may have reverted from Johnson because Thomas would now be eluding federal authorities seeking his arrest for cohabitation. His first family of wife Ane Johnson and their sons Peter and Martin Johnson are still residing in Glenwood, UT.
Thomas Jr is NOT listed on the Census. The name of a "Susan J. Jorgensen" is listed as daughter of Thomas and Susanna Jorgensen with the same approximate age that Thomas would have been. All other details are correct. I think that a mistake was made by someone, either the enumerator or the household member, so I believe that this Susan was really Thomas. The boy child was probably dressed in hand-me-down girl's clothing which was a common practice. If a Susan was ever born, was she a twin to Thomas? Why isn't there any LDS Church record of a birth, blessing or baptism?
8 JAN 1884 Venice, Sevier, UT His second child by Susanna, Annie Johnson, is born.
10 JUL 1889 Manti, Utah LDS temple sealings [adoptions] of Elizabeth, Thomas & Ida Davis, and Crayton Davis [Prisbrey/Johnson] children to Thomas Johnson and Susanna Johnson (Crayton's birth is listed as 2 APRIL 1879, not 1878, in the Manti Temple sealing record). Thomas (Jr) and Annie Johnson are not listed at the sealing because they would have been Born in the Covenant of a temple marriage.
SEP 1889 Now as Thomas Johnson (not Jorgensen), he was sentenced for 'adultery' to 6 months in federal prison, probably Sugarhouse, UT where he joined other polygamists from Glenwood, UT.. His first and second wives, Ane Johnson and Susanna Veater, and his 'son' Crayton Johnson, were forced under penalty of law ($1,000 fine threat) to testify against him.
1892 Thomas Johnson with wife Susanna Veater and children Crayton, Thomas and Annie Johnson moved to Overton, Lincoln (now Clark) County, NV where Thomas continued to call himself Johnson. He served as the third LDS Bishop in Overton.
1901 Thomas Johnson died in Overton, NV and is buried there along side his second wife Susanna Veater in the Pioneer Hill Cemetery.
