The following history came from Amy Mortensen, 3rd Great-grand daughter to Peder Mortensen: Peder Mortensen was born 26 Aug 1832 to Morten Pedersen and Karen M Jacobsen in Oland, Osterby, Hjorring, Denmark. His wife Karen Marie Larsen was born 2 Dee 1837 to Lars Christian Andersen and Kristen Christensen in Oland, Osterby, Hjorring, Denmark. My grandfather, Peder Mortensen was born in Denmark and grew to manhood there. He learned the carpenter trade and had it as a means of support for his family. He met Grandma, or Karen Marie Larsen when he was about 18 or 19 and about the same time, some Mormon Elders were in his home town and left some tracts in the door. He read the tracts and believed them, but at that time, Karen had influence over him and she didn't believe in Mormonism. They were married, and about 24 years after they were married, Grandfather became very sick, he got so he couldn't walk. One day he asked Grandmother to have him carried to where the Elders of the Mormon church were. He also wanted to get Baptized. So his wife consented to get the Elders and was ready to leave the house when they heard a knock at the door, and upon opening it, there stood two Mormon Elders. So she asked them in and they administered to Grandfather. He was made well almost immediately. All of their family but one boy, the oldest (Morten) were baptized in Denmark. They were living in at Osterby, Oland County, Denmark. Grandfather died just before they were ready in leave for America. There were 4 boys and 3 girls. 2 girls died in infancy. The 4 boys and 1 girl Christena came to America, also Grandmother. His home was built of brick with a rock foundation and tile roof. It was built in a U-shaped yard. The house was long and had a nice living apartment. The kitchen was the main living quarters. There they had the large cook stove. The oven was built of brick and had a rounding top. The oven measured 8 feet by 4 feet, by 2 feet. To bake they would make a fire in the oven out of small sticks and wood. When the oven was hot, they would rake the ashes from the oven, then it was ready for baking. Their bread was made of whole wheat in long loaves measuring 2 feet long, 8 inches wide, and 6 inches high. It would take 2 hours to bake, and that would last the family from 2 to 3 weeks. After the bread was baked, they would put flax in the oven to dry the hulls so it would clean easily, then the flax would be put in a chopping machine and ground. It was used to make linen which they made themselves. They wore wooden shoes and woolen socks which were both homemade. Meals were all served in the kitchen. First came breakfast, lunch, dinner, lunch, and then supper. Different foods were served at each meal. Beer, bread, kale, soups, coffee bread, dumplings and potatoes were some of the important foods, also many vegetables. Next came the wash house. It had a large boiler built in the wall with a fire underneath, then there was a small alley , then the dairy house, the work house, and the wood house, then came the vegetable room and machine room, then came the cows and horses and hay, grain and other feed. Their hay was cut with a Scythe and their cows and geese were staked out. The barn was made of rock with rice straw sewed together for the roof. They went to school from 7 to 14 years, or to finish District school. Then they had to take 1 year of Priest study, or Bible study. Some of the games they played were Hockey, Ball, Hide and Seek, spin the plate and a game similar to golf. The wild animals they used to love to hunt were elk, deer, antelope and porcupine. Grandfather was very conservative and when Grandmother came to America, she had money enough for a home and a comfortable living.
