The story of my Father Christian Mortensen was born February 22, 1867 at Oesterby Oealand Denmark.
His parents Peder Mortensen father his mother Karen Marie Larsen Mortensen had nine children all of them were born at Oesterby Oealand Denmark in Hyarringamt County.
When my father was about fifteen years old his father died. His father had joined the L.D.S. church about a year before that. Two of my fathers’ brothers and two of his sisters had died by that time also.
Before his father died he asked their mother and children to immigrate to this country and come to Utah to make their home.
So soon after the father Peder Mortensen had passed away the mother Karen Marie took her children four boys and one girl and came to Utah. They settled at Hyrum Utah where they had friends. My father was sixteen years old at this time there were two brothers older than him and boy just younger than him.
The boys soon got themselves a job to support the family.
My father was baptized Dec. 30, 1885 at Hyrum 18 years old. My father worked a few years with a crew that were building the railroad towards Montana.
My father with this mother and sister and brothers moved to Idaho and lived in Salem ward about 1885 he worked on the railroad a few years more about 1890 my father started to farm he bought a farm from one of his brothers it was just a farm that his brother had homesteaded a year before.
My father’s first farm where he built was about one mile east of Sugar City Idaho on the Teton River at the parties and dances that he went to he met my mother Myrtie Valentine and their courtship started and they were married Feb. 21st in the winter of 1894 and they went to the Logan L.D. S. temple the next summer with a team and wagon and were sealed June 13, 1894. It took them about ten days to make the trip which we make now in a few hours.
There were eight children born to my father and mother four sons and four daughters.
The one son Stanley preceded him in death but the other seven are still alive they are as follows:

My father went back to Denmark on a mission for the L.D. S. in 1910 He spent two and one half years on his mission with many faith promoting experiences.
My mother and us children had many faith promoting experiences while at home. We had to take care of our 160 acre farm along with our 18 head of milk cows.
Money wasn’t near as plentiful as it is now. But we always seemed to be able to send the thirty dollars my father needed to support him on his mission.
He seemed to have plenty of travelers having came here from Denmark and afterwards going there on a mission. My father always had a responsible job in the church after he came back from his mission in Salem and after they moved to Rexburg Idaho in 1918. My father died in March 22, 1932 at the age of 65. Leaving his wife well prepared for and his children all making an honest living which pleased him very much. He was a High Priest at that time.


Christian Mortensen, son of Peder and Karen (Larsen) Mortensen, was born in Denmark in 1867. When he was sixteen years old, he came to America with his mother, Karen (Larsen) Mortensen, as a convert to the church. They settled in Hyrum, Utah for a time and then came to Salem, Idaho.
Myrtie was the daughter of Hans Michal and Sarah Sophia (Loveland) Valentine. She was born at Brigham City, Utah in 1877. Christian and Myrtie were married at Salem in 1894.
In about 1910, Christian was called on a mission for three years to Denmark. Myrtie took care of her six children, two nieces, a nephew, and her aged mother, all in a small three-room house and supported herself and family by milking thirty head of cows while he was gone.
In June 1920, Christian and Myrties’s youngest son, Stanley, and another boy were working together in the beets. They stopped to rest and started playing with a long stick, Stanley had it and the other boy got it away from him and started poking at Stanley. He got behind a post and would dodge from side to side. One time he didn’t dodge quick enough and the stick went into his temple. He was taken to the hospital and everything possible was done for him he died two days later, before his mother returned home from June Conference in Salt Lake.
In December, Christian bought a home in Rexburg, because he thought it would help Myrtie get over the shock of losing her son.
Christian sold most of his farm to his sons and neighbors, keeping only the small farm for himself to run. One night as he was walking home, leading his horse because it was so cold, someone in a car ran over him and left him for dead. A laundry van came along and the driver put him in the van and started for the hospital. Christian asked to be taken home instead. The wheel had run over his legs and chest and he was never well again. He died in 1932.
Myrtie lived on with her daughters until her health failed, and she died in 1953, in Rexburg.
