Rosalie Nielsen was born Aug. 14, 1866 in Denmark. Her mother joined the LDS church and wanted to go to Utah but her father was opposed. Her mother finally took her five children and left her husband to go to Utah. He refused to go. Rosalie was unhappy leaving her father and beautiful country. When she arrived in Utah she was happy to see the mountains. She had to learn English which was easier for her since she was about 14 years old. She met Arthur Lewis who had come from England. They married and had a large family. When the oldest children were nearly adults they moved to southern Nevada. Rosalie suffered a miscarriage and stroke with her last pregnancy and was partially paralyzed. She with her family were very active in church and had a very happy, loving family. They were very close and united.
My name is Elayne Leavittt Sorensen, this is a story about Great-Grandma Rosalie Lewis that my mother, Lorean Lewis Doty told me, she was the daughter of Clarence Lewis, who was one of Rosalie's 12 children. I will try and tell this story to the best of my memory.
Rosalie knew she was going to die, the night before she did. She packed all her meager belongings neatly in a suitcase, with everything folded nice and neat, before she went to bed that night. She died that night, in Pioche, Nevada but was buried in Overton, Nevada. So the night before the funeral in Overton, she came to her daughter in a dream and told her that the person that had dressed her in her Temple clothes, in Pioche, Nevada, had put the robe on the wrong shoulder. When her body came to Overton for the funeral, the casket was opened and the robe WAS, on the wrong shoulder and the mistake was corrected. I'm sure that she was a very valiant women, to be given this opportunity to be in her daughters dreams and have this problem corrected. My mother said she was quite the seamstress too and sewed on a treadle sewing machine and would have her son Emery, because of her stoke, push the peddle with his hands. She would tell him when to start and stop pushing. That must have been a very hard thing for both of them. What teamwork !!!!
My Uncle Paul Lewis, my Mother's brother, also told me a story about when Rosalie was asked, what the hardest trial she had gone through in her life was, and she said, "Not having good firewood"! Now there aren't too many trees in the desert to cut down for good firewood. Sometimes they would just bring her willows and small sticks to cook the food with.
Rosalie came to the United States with her mother and siblings. Her father did not come. When she was in her 50s she suffered a stroke and was limited in what she could do for the family. Her daughter Ethel cared for her and helped in the family until she returned to Salt Lake to marry. End. The following has been in my file for many years and I do not know who wrote it or who gave it to me. I will copy it exact with the same spelling, punctuation and information: Grandma Rosalie Lewis started school in Copenhagen Denmark 1872 at the age of 6. Graduated in Copenhagen in 1879. Baptized in Denmark Re Baptized in Salt Lake 4 Nov. 1895 Re Confirmed in Salt Lake 10 Nov 1895. Grandma came to this country from Denmark in 1880. They went from Copenhagen to Liverpool where they caught a boat for New York. From New York they went to Albany where they caught a train to Salt Lake. The fare was $35 a piece. Grandma hated the trip to Salt Lake. She didn't like the flat rolling plains. When they finally got to the mountains she loved it. Many times she spoke of her beautiful Copenhagen. She felt badly about leaving her friends and her father. She was very sea sick on the trip across the ocean. The hard sea biscuts were not much help. She and her brother, Neils, were very close and shared many a good joke. Locked in Church yard in Copenhagen all night when she was only 5 years old. Police and Grandma looked all night for her. Next morning when gates were opened she thought her mother would welcome her with open arms but instead she spanked her and called her a naughty girl. Her mother loved her very much though. She was the youngest of five children. End.
